William "Billy" Garwood Obituary

William “Billy” Edward Garwood, 83, passed away May 17th, 2026. 

Billy was born to the late William Samuel and Lucille Regan Garwood on November 2nd, 1942 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Louisville.

Billy graduated from Oldham County High School in 1960 and joined the US Army in October 1963 and served with the 169th Engineer Battalion until he was deployed to Vietnam in 1965-1966.  Upon his honorable discharge from the US Army, he went to work at Kroger Distribution having retired after 37.5 years.

Billy was a proud lifetime member of the VFW Post 1170, which he held the positions of

Commander, Sr. Vice, Jr. Vice, Surgeon, Trustee and House Committee.

At the VFW 6th District Level he proudly served as Commander, Sr. Vice, Jr. Vice, Judge, Advocate and Trustee.  In 2009-2010, Billy was Captain of All State Team District Commander.

At the VFW Department of Kentucky Level, Billy proudly served as Assistant Sargent of Arms. For many years he was Sargent of Arms and elected to Area B Finance Committee.

Charter member of the Honor Flight who also served on the Executive Board.  He also was the caretaker of the wheelchairs for our Veterans since 2008 and continued to present.

In 2010 Billy was appointed as Board Member and Chairman of Design Committee for “Veterans Memorial Park” located in Crestwood, Kentucky.

He was a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter, 454 and Disabled American Veterans.  Billy was a member of Amvets Post 161 and American Legion Post 39.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, and grandfather Edward Samuel Garwood known as “Old Timer.”

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter Kristen Garwood (Brad); grandchild, Samuel Wiseman; stepdaughter, Tina Hampton (Jeff); grandchildren, Starla Bullock, Tiffany Bullock, Brandi Swanigan (Drew); great grandson, Kobe Bullock; sisters, Judy Theriac (Norman), Joyce Woosley (Wendell); nephew, Troy Woosley; great nephew, Corey Woosley (Amelia)
