Wally was born February 15, 1924, in Great Falls, Montana to his parents the late Frances and Alvin Past. His family relocated to Maywood, New Jersey when he was a boy, where he grew up next door to his future wife, Jeanne Mohring. He graduated from New York University School of Medicine in 1948, followed by an internship at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. He and Jeanne married in 1949, when he was immediately called up by the Navy. He served at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for two years. Upon discharge from the Navy, he and Jeanne lived in Binghamton, New York and in Detroit, Michigan, where he completed a residency in Pathology at Henry Ford Hospital. They settled permanently in Louisville in 1956 when Wally accepted a teaching position at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He taught there for twenty-eight years. During these years he was also a staff pathologist at Memorial Hospital in Floyd County, Indiana. He retired from the practice of medicine in 1987.
After retirement, Jeanne and Wally enjoyed many years living in their house on the Ohio River. He was a passionate sailor, both on the river and during many sailing trips to the Caribbean. They also had a retirement home in Key Largo, Florida, spending their winters there until Jeanne’s death in 2015 at the age of 85, and after 65 years of marriage. Wally continued to visit Key Largo with friends every winter up until shortly before he died.
