Sandra Guyton Obituary

Sandra Jean (Thompson) Guyton died peacefully on December 28, 2022, at the age of 81. She
passed away at the Blake Assisted Living Facility in Charlottesville, VA, comforted with family by
her side and surrounded by love.

Sandy was born in Louisville, KY, on her mother’s 25th birthday. She was the youngest of three
beloved daughters born to James Marion and Charlotte Morrison Thompson. Sandy attended
Holy Cross Grade School and was a 1959 graduate of Mercy Academy. After high school she
volunteered for the Red Cross before beginning her career working as a secretary for the
Martin Ceder Elevator Company and for Marion Flexner’s Kentucky International Travel Agency
in Louisville.

In 1962 Sandy married Ronald Guyton, also of Louisville, who she was known to as San. Ron and
San enjoyed 56 years of marriage together until Ron’s passing in 2018. During Ron’s 21 years in
the Air Force, Sandy devoted most of her time to raising their three children, whom she gave
anything they ever needed. She enjoyed being a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader for her
two daughters and helping them earn their badges. As a military wife, Sandy managed
numerous frequent military moves all over the U.S., several of which were to last only a few
months. She also mastered being a single parent during Ron’s overseas TDY deployments, one
of which lasted for a year.

Once the family was able to put down permanent roots in Northern Virginia, Sandy began a 23-
year career working as a secretary on the neurosurgery unit of Fairfax Hospital. Her skill and
great compassion for others in need often led the nurses to seek her assistance with patient
bedside care. This gave Sandy great fulfillment, as her heart was always open and full of love for
others.

Sandy’s greatest joys revolved around her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and
grandmother and enjoyed cooking amazing meals for everyone to enjoy together. Sandy loved
Christmas and always made it a very special time for her family. She laughed at silly jokes and
could also laugh at herself, and she always made sure that any family get-togethers were extra
special and fun. Sandy loved flowers and gardening, decorating and making wreaths, shopping
for gifts, card games, Yahtzee, camping with her family, and traveling. The latter inspired Sandy
and Ron to go on several tours and cruises all over the world and to spend many summers and
falls along the coast of Maine, which quickly became their favorite family vacation destination.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Marian Sue Thompson Knoop and Carol
June Thompson, and her beloved husband Ron. She is survived by her daughters Karen and
Kathy, her son Chris (Kelly), and her two adored grandsons Sam and Cole. Other survivors
include her nieces Susan, Nancy, Charlotte, and Carrie, and her nephews Rick and Clif.
