LaVerne E McMahan
July 5, 1927- June 26, 2024
LaVerne, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, was united with Jesus on Wednesday, June 26. She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond & Lizetta Gorbandt; husband, Arvel; son, Jerry; sister, Norma O'Bryan and brother in law, Richard Layer. She is survived by her son Danny (Ann), Daughter-in-law Carol, grandchildren, Molly McMahan (Sunny), Christy Weaver (Matt), Bradley McMahan (Cristy) & Joseph McMahan (Angelica), 8 great- grandchildren, 4 great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
All those who knew LaVerne recognized the great strength that was tucked into her small frame. She was a homemaker, business owner, gardener and occasional snake wrangler. During World War II she helped build airplanes in San Diego while Arvel served in the Marines. She served on many committees and boards in her life, but the ones that brought her the most joy were the Oldham County Library Board & the Crestwood UMC Building Committee. LaVerne loved to fish, camp, play golf and walk for miles, especially at the beach. As a child of the depression, she found great joy and purpose in making something out of nothing, best exhibited by her shell mirrors and lamps. She delighted in having her family for meals, making her iconic Macaroni and Cheese for each gathering.
She was a member of Crestwood United Methodist Church and in the Choir for over 70 years. She would often sing with a group of women from church called “The Sing Along Sisters”. They liked to travel to nearby assisted living and skilled care facilities and whenever they visited Magnolia Springs, LaVerne would jump up and sing without missing a beat.
But more than anything she loved Jesus and her family, evidenced by their love for Jesus and for each other, a legacy that meant more to her than anything else.
Visitation is at Crestwood UMC on Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. Celebration of Life 12:00 PM
