With sadness and joy we share the news, this spirited Kentuckian left this world well prepared for the greatest adventure yet with his Savior Jesus Christ.
John is survived by his loving wife of 72 years Alice (Russell), sons John jr. “Jay”, Jim (Elise), daughter Kathi (Joe Brumley), grandsons Logan and Spenser, brother David, brothers-in-law Thomas Brown (Sandra), Herbert “Buddy” Russell, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents Leonard and Hattie Thompson, ten siblings and granddaughter Kayce.
Dedicated to serve family, community and country, he was a long-standing member of the United Methodist Church. John enjoyed a successful career in banking, beginning at Crestwood State Bank. He completed three years in the United States Army, followed by eighteen years in the United States Army National Guard. He achieved rank of and retired as Command Sgt Major, was a graduate of the Kentucky Military Academy, and earned the distinction as a Raider in Boone’s Command. He was a member of the South Oldham Volunteer Fire Department and attended many in their moments of distress.
He explored new places with his wife and a group of close friends known as the Old Glory campers. Square dancing and weekly card games also provided numerous happy times.
A private Military Honors service was held with internment at the Floydsburg Cemetery.
