John Hill Obituary

John Carroll Hill, a beloved husband, father and grandfather (Poopaw), passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, in Louisville, KY. Born during the Great Flood on February 13th, 1937, Carroll grew up in the Beechmont neighborhood. He later moved to Kenwood Hill and met his future wife, Marcella Hill, at Victory Memorial Baptist Church. With his love of math and physics, he became an electrical engineering professor at the University of Louisville SPEED School.

Carroll attended every family event wearing his self-cut, frayed jean shorts, flannel shirt, tube socks, and ball cap - always with a camera in hand. He loved to take the long way to any destination via the Gene Snyder Freeway and despised all drive-thrus. Everyone had to park and go in together. He never met a cat he didn’t like; and he had a profound interest in the Civil War, WW2 planes, and HAM radio. More than anything, he was devoted to the lifelong pursuit of eating endless ice cream.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marcella (Bell) Hill; his children, Tara Hill (Greg Merriman), Tami Hill, Michael Hill (Rebecca), Allison Hill, and Alaena Holland (Brad); his grandchildren, Sarah Bressoud, Marissa Merriman, Callie Bressoud and Wyatt Hill.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Clara Belle Hall, and his father, John Coburn Hill.
