James C. Carpenter, Sr. (Jim) of Louisville, KY passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023, at the age of 89. Born in Louisville, KY on May 6, 1934, to the late John R. and Marie (Hettiger) Carpenter, Sr. Jim was a member of the first graduating class of Eastern High School. He attended the University of Kentucky where he met his loving wife, Gloria. Jim was a successful Real Estate Broker and Developer. He had a zest for life and lived every day to the fullest. He loved to be outside in the sun, whether it was playing golf, riding his horses earlier on in life, or spending time at Fripp Island. Family meant the world to him. He said he lived a great life and would not change a thing.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Gloria T. (Geiger) Carpenter, daughters, Ginny C. Lutes, Tammy C. Portillo (Michael), Beth C. Riley (Anthony), sons, James C. Carpenter, Jr. (Kim), and Thomas E. Carpenter, grandchildren, Stephanie C. Lund (Kevin), Megan L. Tafel (Tosh), Jason M. Portillo (Chelbie), James A. Lutes III, Tara A. Slavin, Jennifer M. Carpenter, Joshua M. Portillo, T. Curtis Slavin, Jeremy M. Portillo, R. Cole Riley, Taylor S. Riley, and Reese E. Riley, great-grandchildren, William G. Lund, and Oliver R. Lund, as well as numerous extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother, John R. Carpenter, Jr., his mother, Marie L. Carpenter, and his father, John R. Carpenter, Sr.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church-Chapel 212 Mt. Mercy Dr. Pewee Valley, KY 40056 from 10 am to 11 am. A Memorial Mass will immediately follow at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s honor to St. Aloysius School, Pewee Valley, KY.
