James Leonard Whitmer (Jim) was born on January 14, 1947 in the Highlands area of Louisville, KY and went to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 14, 2024 at the age of 77. He died peacefully with the assurance that he was a born again Christian, on his birthday, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Jim was the sixth of seven children born to his parents Blanche and Braxton Whitmer. The family grew up in Louisville where they were provided a wonderful life by their parents. In 1965 he graduated from Ahren’s Trade School and in 1967 he graduated from United Electronic Institute and married the love of his life, Sharon Deel (Whitmer). Shortly after, he and Sharon moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where Jim worked in the electronics field trouble shooting electrical components for fighter planes. During this time two of their three sons were born, James Darren (wife Stefanie) and Scott Patrick (wife Jessica). After a few years in Cincinnati, they moved back to Louisville where their third son was born, Brian Cecil (died in a car accident in 1994). Jim began working in the industrial linen, uniform and laundry industry as a manager and continued to do until his retirement in 2015. They have five grandchildren, Jillian, Ethan, Erin, Andrew, and Caleb. All of their sons, wives and grandchildren are Christ followers and know that Jim is now resting with his Heavenly family. Jim’s life as a Christian began in his early childhood and he has been a member of various churches throughout his life, presently he has been a member of Southeast Christian Church since 1995. Jim loved many things and never turned down doing activities with his wife, children, grandchildren, or friends. Whether it was sports, an amusement park or riding his bike long distances with friends he was never known to sit still for long, unless it was reading a book which became one of his passions later in life.
Jim is preceded in death by his son Brian, his mother & father, brothers Darrell, Cecil, Wayne and sisters Geneva & Brenda, with his last remaining sibling Daisy residing in Louisville. Jim leaves behind his wife, sons Darren and Scott, his grandchildren, many nieces and nephews that loving call him “Uncle Jim” and many friends from Kentucky to Florida. He will be missed by all.
A Celebration of Life for Jim will take place at Southeast Christian Church at the Crestwood Campus, 6220 Crestwood Station, Crestwood, Kentucky 40014. Visitation will be from Noon to 2:00pm followed by a funeral service and burial beginning at 2:00 on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Arrangements made by Stoess Funeral Home.
