James Milton Stoess

James Milton Stoess born October 29, 1935, in Crestwood, KY and passed away on May 6, 2023, at his daughter’s home in Jeffersonville, IN. 

October 29, 1935 – May 6, 2023

The dash in between those two dates represents a life well lived. An artisan, a son, a brother, a husband, a father, an uncle, a grandfather, a great grandfather, a friend, and a stonemason are some of the titles he brilliantly fulfilled. Jim’s life was filled with hard work, but he always took time to listen. He knew no strangers. He has positively impacted more people during that dash than most people meet in a lifetime.  Jim is already greatly missed but know he would want us to go on and do good in his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Addison Ritchie Stoess & Cleo Bell Bruner Stoess, his wife Elizabeth Ann Ellis Stoess, his brothers Albert Russell Stoess, Addison Stoess, his sisters Bertha Belle Stoess Purcell Yoakum, Holly Elizabeth Stoess Fischer, Dena Lee Stoess Thurmond, his brother-in-law and partner in business William Fischer, his brother-in-law and dear friend John Hendrickson and sister-in-law Dot Stoess.

James leaves behind his daughter Kathryn Elizabeth Stoess Kessinger (David), son Edward Ritchie Stoess (Cara).  Four grandchildren, Nathaniel Edward Stoess (Jessica), Samuel Timothy Stoess, Matthew Wilson Stoess, Grace Renee Stoess, their mother Deena Newton Stoess, two great grandchildren, Natalie Dae Nichols and Landon Matthew Stoess, brother Bob Stoess, brother-in-law Jim Thurmond, sister-in-law Kathy Stoess, brother-in-law Reverend Stewart Edward Ellis (Grace), sister-in-law Dorothy Dow Hendrickson and brother-in-law David Brown Ellis (Mary Jo), many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.  We thank Hosparus Health for their help caring for Dad. 

Instead of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville 1620 Bank Street, Louisville, KY 40203, Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church 119 Central Ave., Pewee Valley, KY 40056 or Hosparus Health 6200 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40205. A Habitat House will be built in his honor.

Gathering of Family and Friends will be Sunday May 21st from 3 pm to 7 pm on at Stoess Funeral Home, 6534 West Highway 22, Crestwood, KY. A celebration of his life will be at Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church on Monday May 22nd at 1 pm.  Private Burial will follow at Duncan Memorial.
