On September 2, 2021 George “Big George” Matherly passed to his rest and is sleeping in Jesus waiting for Him to come to raise him to eternal life.
He was born August 9, 1946 in Danville, Virginia. He was married to Marilyn (Kroeger) Matherly on April 3, 1966. George was a Vietnam war veteran serving in Panama between 1966 to 1968. He served with the 508th 82nd airborne division. After leaving the army he became a bricklayer by trade. In 1977 he hired on to the railroad as a conductor with L&N (now CSX). He then became a railroad engineer operating engines from Louisville to Cincinnati, Owensboro and the old road to Lexington. He was promoted Road Foreman of Engines in 1994 and retired in 2010 from CSX with 33 years of service
He loved and collected old cars and enjoyed this hobby with his son. Besides his wife Marilynhe is survived by his son Phillip Matherly (Samantha), his daughter Renee Hayden (Mark), 5 grandchildren, Christina, Cody, and Cassidy Matherly and Nash and Jamison Hayden. He loved his kids and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. He is also survived by his mother, Coretta Davis Matherly of Tennessee, sister Frances Peterson, brother Danny Matherly (Abby),Diane Wofford ( Edward) and several nieces and nephews.
He was a Seventh day Adventist and attended Middletown Seventh day Adventist Church and Pewee Valley Church. He loved to volunteer in many activities with the church. He had many friends in the community.
There will be a celebration of life October 10, 2021, 1-5 pm at 3301 Elder Park Road,
LaGrange, KY.
