Donald Eugene MacGregor, of Crescent Hill, Kentucky, died peacefully at home with family on Friday, November 8, 2023. Don was born on February 5, 1926 in Lincoln, Nebraska and grew up in St. Edward, Nebraska until they moved to Oldham County, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents William Newman MacGregor and Winnie Mable (McKay) MacGregor, and his brother Warren Alexander MacGregor, who died in World War II in an air fight over Bremen, Germany on April 17, 1943.
The day after graduating high school, Don reported to Fort Knox, Kentucky to begin his service in the army. He fought in the Pacific, mainly invading the Marianna islands in 1944. He served in the 742nd Amphibious Tank Battalion. He was sent back to the states after the army discovered he was the sole surviving son and was honorably discharged on April 18, 1946. Among his honors and medals, he earned the Purple Heart and was a proud WWII veteran.
On November 22, 1952, he married the love of his life, Betty Joan Sanders (Joan) at Danville Baptist Church. They were married 66 years until her death on October 31, 2018.
Don had a strong relationship with God and family. He practiced Godlike kindness and humbleness in his daily life, whether it be taking trips with Joan, spending time with friends, and visits with his daughter and grandchild Faith. He and Joan helped to rebuild homes lost in South Carolina after hurricane Hugo struck in September of 1989. His involvement in his church lasted most of his life, until the past few years. He was a member of the Crescent Hill Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite Foundation. His heart was golden.
His occupation as a photographer never went unnoticed. He worked for General Electric, the Governor’s office in Kentucky, L&N Railroad, and retired from the University of Louisville as Chief Biomedical Photographer.
Don is survived by his daughter and son in law, Alice(MacGregor) Sheehan and Louis A Barber; his devoted granddaughter, Faith Davis and her beautiful girls Reign(Reignbow) and Allie(Chacha); grandchildren, April McCloud(Wayne), Amy Kay(Randy), and Matthew McCloud(Candice); multiple great grandchildren; his amazing niece and nephew in law, Marikay(Sanders)Abuzuaiter(Isa) and their wonderful sons, Joey and Michael; and his nephew, David Sanders(Barbara) and their children.
