Dena Lee(Stoess) Thurmond

Dena Thurmond, 80, passed away Saturday, February 12 at Baptist Health Louisville.

Dena was a graduate of Oldham County High School and Western Kentucky University.  She retired from teaching in Jefferson County Public Schools in 1994 after 31 years of service, 28 of those at Fairdale High School.  Dena was a member of Broadway Baptist Church. Dena will be remembered for her thoughtful and generous spirit.  Those who knew her were blessed to receive sticker covered greeting cards of hope and encouragement.  She spread joy to her friends facing challenges wrapped in tiny packages. Dena rarely met a stranger. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Addison and Cleo Stoess, and siblings Russell, Addison Stoess Jr., and Bertha Yoakam.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years Jim Thurmond, children Jon (Heidi) and Laura (David) Schellenbach; grandchildren Jacob and Daniel Thurmond, Lily, Andrew and Molly Schellenbach; siblings James and Bob Stoess and Holly Fischer and numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be Wednesday Febuary 16th, 2022 at Stoess Funeral Home from 3pm until 8pm, Funeral service will be Thursday Febuary 17th, 2022 at 11am, with burial to follow at Floydsburg Cemetery.
