Clarence Albert Stoess, (94), of Pewee Valley, Kentucky, passed away on September 15, 2024.
Clarence, fondly known as Bert by his friends and Pop by his family, was born to Albert Louis and Nellie May on April 10, 1930. Bert never moved far from the place of his birth, yet he explored much of the United States of America. As a child he grew up next door to the house he was born in. When he married Doris, the love of his life, and his bride for seventy-four years, they lived in Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Fairbanks, Alaska during Bert’s time of military service in the United States Army. When they returned home, they moved into the house he was born in and started a family of their own. He has two sons, Rickey Lee, (Lisa) and Larry Wayne, (Kathie). He has five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
He worked for a while at Morehead Chevrolet under the G.I. bill, learning how to do mechanical and body work on cars. After a few entrepreneurial endeavors, he began a thirty-three-year career working at Clayton and Lambert Manufacturing Company. He retired from C&L in 1995 as an accomplished, and self-trained, tool and die maker.
He and a small band of friends, known as the Old Glory Campers, experienced some of the best treasures life has to offer, as they traveled back and forth across the country and square-danced across the state. The memories he forged with his friends made for beautiful stories to share in the golden years of his life.
He will always be remembered by his family as a man with a deep and abiding faith in God, a churchman who devoted a lifetime of faithful attendance to Crestwood United Methodist Church, a man with incredible patience and persistence, a poet, a jack-of-all-trades, an innovative thinker, and a repairer of broken cars and other broken things that most of us would have thrown away.
To celebrate Bert’s life, a time of visitation with his family will be held at Crestwood United Methodist Church on Monday, September 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life worship service will begin at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to Church of the Promise, (www.promisecommunity.com) or Crestwood United Methodist Church, (www.crestwoodmethodist.com).
