Gary Mathis Obituary

Gary Mathis (b. November 22, 1957) passed away on August 24, 2018 at his home. He was a beloved husband, father, son, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He leaves behind his wife, Linda (Sarrett) of LaGrange; son Neal and wife Ashley of Tompkinsville, Kentucky; grandchildren Molly, Max, and Maggie; sister Sherry Martin and her husband Tony of Cottage Grove, Oregon; and mother, Elaine of Valley Station, as well asmany nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his father Willard and first wife Charlotte. 

He was a 1975 graduate of Valley High School and held degrees in Civil Engineering from Western Kentucky University. Gary worked for years in economic and community development in and around Bowling Green, Scottsville, Carrolton, and Benton, Kentucky. He also served with distinguish in the U.S. Air Force from 1980-1984. He was beloved and respected by those he worked alongside of and a consistent benefit to the communities he served. Across Kentucky, his work has made a difference for the people of this state. 

Gary was also a faithful member of several churches of Christ. In LaGrange, he attended the Oldham Woods Church of Christ alongside of his wife Linda and several family members. While he lived in Scottsville, he attended the Scottsville Church of Christ and loved serving the young people of the congregation by teaching classes and regularly attending camp in the summer. He also served as a deacon at the Lehman Avenue Church of Christ in Bowling Green and the Benton Church of Christ in Benton, Kentucky.
