Rita Butler Obituary

Rita Butler, deceased Thursday, March 7th, 2024. Cardiac arrest due to sudden onset of pneumonia while in ICU at UofL St. Mary’s hospital, Louisville, KY.

Rita is survived by her husband, Craig Butler and nephews Michael Natkin and Joel Natkin. Her parents were Ann and Benjamin Rosenbaum (deceased). Born in West Orange NJ, she attended Indiana University majoring in fine arts, then attended school in California to get certified to teach elementary education.  She moved to Louisville in the early 70’s and started with the Louisville Free Public Library as she obtained a degree from the University of Kentucky in library science, to become a children’s librarian, working in that capacity for most of her 30 years with LFPL, retiring in 2006. She loved telling stories, had a rich repertoire of folk songs from the 60’s she loved to share, loved gardening to tend to her many varieties of flowers (and vegetables) in her gardens at her Beechmont neighborhood home with the help of her husband Craig of over 38 years. Rita was active on the board of Interfaith Paths for Peace as she represented the Baha’i Faith which she faithfully adhered to since joining in the late 60’s. She also was on the board of Louisville Grows, planting trees and helping with various community events. She will be missed by all of those who were touched by her direct frankness, broad range of knowledge, sympathy and heart centered nature.
