Joseph Douglas Van Meter, 78, was born on Christmas Day, 1945. He passed away during a fun evening with his best friends on April 20, 2024. He was born in Owensboro, KY to L.E. & Jean Van Meter. He was a graduate of UK, Captain of the football team and awarded the 110% award for giving his all in every game and practice.
Giving His All is a perfect description of him in every stage of life. Doug not only gave his very best in his football days, more importantly he did so in his marriage to the love of his life Barbara, to his beloved family, in his career in financial services, and as a real estate and mortgage professional. Most importantly, he was as a diligent and devoted follower of Christ. He truly loved leading bible studies, mentoring people, helping those in need and was the “go to” person for words of wisdom on most any subject. He most certainly accomplished his mission as described in Matthew 25:23.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Hayden), three brothers (Buzzy, Chip, and John), son Doug, daughter Susan Wilcox (Toby), daughter Paige Sturgeon (Tommy), six grandchildren, Tanner (Meredith), Brogan (Storm), Noah (Macey), Thomas, Walker, and Julia), a great-granddaughter Sunny Jo and two soon to be born great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 28 at the Chapel in the Woods, 1407 Moser Road, Louisville, KY, with visitation at 4 and a service at 5. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the school fund at www.saltandlightbaptist.org whose mission it is to start a tuition free Christian school.
