Charles McCombs Obituary

Charles R. McCombs 10/04/1947 - 03/23/2024

Charles McCombs was born in Oldham County to Charles E. and Nancy Jane McCombs who owned the Charles McCombs General Store in Brownsboro Kentucky for decades. They provided a loving home for him, encouraged his educational studies and made sure he knew what hard work was all about. He could point out every field where, during his early years, he cut and baled hay.

Charlie graduated from Oldham County High School in 1965. He graduated from Florida State University with an undergraduate degree in sociology. He earned a Master's degree from The University of Manitoba. After moving back to Kentucky, Charlie accepted a position with Jefferson Community College as an instructor of Sociology. After forty years, he retired as Professor having established himself as a scholar in his discipline, a leader of the faculty at large having served as Vice Chairperson many times. He provided outreach to the surrounding communities. He coordinated the educational programs at Luther Luckett Correctional Complex and the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women, and watched with pleasure many of his students achieve degrees and reach toward a better life. He enjoyed his colleagues spirited conversations and their congeniality. He also threw great Christmas parties!

Surviving is his love of over 33 years, Virginia Campbell McCombs. Charlie is also survived by the joy of his life, his daughter Meghan McCombs Smith (Jim) and his stepson, Morgan S. Ferguson, (Brittney) who he said knew how to fix anything. He leaves behind his beloved granddaughters Ava, Gracie, Peyton and Isabella. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Maxi Campbell Reynolds (Tim) and his brother-in-law Faron Sparkman. Nephews Graham and Warner Sparkman and Niece Tate Reynolds Smith also survive. He also leaves many cousins who can recall his shenanigans.

We will hold him forever in our hearts.
